POOL BOY

A lifeguard pines for a more exciting job.

SHOW AND TELL

Let’s try mixing an Ocean’s 11 or a Guy Ritchie-style plan with the banal observational conversations found in Seinfeld. Sticking true to a love for dialogue-heavy narratives, the goal was to craft visuals that would react and play into the back and forth as if the arguments themselves were bending reality to prove a point. We’re watching the crew pull their typical work on an average day, but instead of hearing about how the subterfuge functions, we listen in on hypothetical after hypothetical as the coworkers humor our lifeguard’s laments.

A PARTICIPATION TROPHY

I pitched this film as a culmination of everything we had learned up to this point. I wanted to paint on the largest scale we could achieve within our limitations, and I believe this still remains squarely at the top in that regard. Drawing on experiences of working swim meets as a videographer while assembling a cast of several familiar faces along with those we had always wanted to work with, this film was our graduation from our initial style and goals in creating self-contained stories. While there is more to do with these characters after the credits roll, this narrative was designed to feel completely resolved by the end, whereas our current work intends to reel audiences in for a bigger picture.

Scale

PAY ATTENTION ONLY OVER HERE

Being one of the larger scales we have attempted, this story required mixing and matching different patches of visuals to convey the surreal concept of a swim meet event responding to the patter and pace of the dialogue as our lifeguard laments his job to each coworker. Filmed at the Cherokee Aquatic Center, we were able to create a real sense of space to play around in.
